Lightning Protection Testing

Lightning Protection System Testing & Maintenance

Defend your building against catastrophic atmospheric surges. TM UK Group Limited provides specialist, BS EN 62305 compliant lightning protection testing to safeguard your structure, your electronic infrastructure, and your personnel.

What is Lightning Protection Testing?

A commercial Lightning Protection System (LPS) is designed to capture a lightning strike and safely channel its immense electrical energy directly into the ground, completely bypassing your building’s structure and internal wiring.

However, these systems are exposed to the harshest environmental elements—wind, rain, corrosion, and physical damage from roof works. A broken conductive tape or a degraded earth rod renders the entire system useless. Lightning Protection Testing is the rigorous process of verifying the mechanical integrity and electrical resistance of this system to ensure it will perform flawlessly when a storm hits.

The Catastrophic Cost of an Untested System

Many building owners assume that because they have copper strips on their roof, they are protected. If that system is not electrically sound, a lightning strike can result in:

  • Structural Destruction: Lightning searching for a path to earth can blast through masonry, concrete, and roofing materials, causing massive structural damage.
  • Devastating Fires: Strikes that arc across internal building materials easily ignite commercial fires that spread rapidly through roof spaces.
  • Total Electronic Failure: The electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and power surge from a strike can instantly fry server rooms, IT networks, and expensive manufacturing equipment.

Our Comprehensive Testing Process

Our specialist engineers do not just look at the roof; we conduct a full structural and sub-surface analysis of your entire protection network.

1. Air Termination & Roof Network

We physically inspect all roof-mounted strike pads, finials, and conductive tape networks to ensure they are securely fastened, free of severe corrosion, and mechanically sound.

2. Down Conductor Continuity

We test the continuity of the down conductors—the vital cables that carry the strike down the side of your building—ensuring there are no breaks or high-resistance joints.

3. Earth Electrode Resistance Testing

The most critical test. We measure the resistance of the earth electrodes driven into the ground to ensure the strike can safely dissipate. If resistance is too high, the system will fail.

Complete Integration: Surge Protection Devices (SPDs)

A lightning protection system only protects the outside of your building. To protect the electronics inside, you need Surge Protection Devices (SPDs). As part of our comprehensive service, TM UK Group can inspect, test, and install mandatory SPDs into your main distribution boards, providing a complete 360-degree defense against atmospheric transients.
