Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Protect your staff and your premises from electrical faults. TMUK Group Ltd provides high-volume, risk-assessed PAT testing for commercial offices, schools, hotels, and industrial sites nationwide.

What is In-Service Inspection & Testing (PAT)?

While an EICR covers the hidden wiring inside your walls, Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) focuses on the equipment you plug into the wall. If an item has a plug—from a staff room kettle or office PC to heavy-duty industrial power tools—it requires routine inspection to ensure it is safe to use.

Faulty appliances are one of the leading causes of electrical fires and fatal electric shocks in the UK workplace. Regular PAT testing identifies frayed cords, damaged plugs, blown fuses, and internal faults before they cause harm or property damage.

A Smarter Approach: Risk-Based Testing Frequencies

Many contractors will tell you that every appliance needs testing every single year. This is a myth.

In accordance with the latest 5th Edition of the IET Code of Practice, TMUK Group Ltd utilises a proportionate, risk-based approach to testing. The frequency of testing should depend on the equipment class, how heavily it is used, and the environment it is in.

  • Low-Risk (e.g., Office Desktop PC): Rarely moved, sits in a clean, dry environment. Requires less frequent formal testing.
  • Medium-Risk (e.g., Hotel Hairdryer): Used frequently by different members of the public. Requires more regular inspection.
  • High-Risk (e.g., Construction Site Grinder): Used in harsh, dusty, or wet environments, subjected to heavy physical wear. Requires highly frequent testing (sometimes every 3 months).

We work with you to create a bespoke PAT asset register and testing schedule, ensuring you remain 100% compliant without paying for unnecessary over-testing.

Our Comprehensive PAT Process

Our engineers are equipped with the latest downloadable PAT testing machinery, allowing us to test hundreds of items per day with minimal disruption to your workforce.

1. Formal Visual Inspection

Over 90% of appliance faults are found visually. We meticulously check for damaged flexes, cracked casings, signs of overheating, and ensure the correct fuse rating is fitted in the plug.

2. Electrical Testing

For Class I and Class II appliances, we perform specialised tests including Earth Continuity, Insulation Resistance, and Polarity checks to ensure the internal wiring is safe.

3. Tagging & Asset Reporting

Passed items receive a clear, durable “Pass” label with a unique ID barcode. You receive a fully digitised Asset Register and Certificate of Testing for your compliance records.

Transparent Commercial Pricing: Sliding Scale

Our PAT testing pricing is designed to offer maximum economies of scale for commercial and industrial clients. The more items you have, the lower your cost per item becomes.

The TMUK Advantage: Free Minor Repairs

Because TMUK Group Ltd utilises fully qualified electrical engineers, we do more than just stick a ‘fail’ label on a vital piece of equipment. If an appliance fails due to a minor, easily fixable issue—such as a damaged plug casing, an incorrect fuse rating, or a loose wire inside the plug—our engineers will often perform these minor repairs on the spot, free of charge, and pass the item. This ensures your staff can keep working safely with minimal disruption and prevents you from having to pay for costly replacements or re-tests.
