A school electrical safety inspection is not a paperwork exercise to fit around term dates. It is a practical check on the systems that power classrooms, kitchens, plant rooms, IT suites, sports facilities and emergency lighting – often across buildings of very different ages and conditions. For estates and facilities teams, the objective is clear: identify electrical danger early, keep the school operating safely and maintain evidence that the estate is being properly managed.
The main inspection of a school’s fixed electrical installation is normally recorded through an Electrical Installation Condition Report, or EICR. A competent electrical contractor examines the condition of the installation and carries out appropriate testing to determine whether it remains safe for continued use.
The scope should reflect the real estate, not just the main teaching block. A thorough programme may include distribution boards, electrical panels, final circuits, sockets, lighting circuits, isolators, fixed equipment supplies and earthing and bonding arrangements. It should also account for detached buildings, temporary classrooms, caretaker accommodation, workshops, kitchens, science rooms, halls and external supplies.
Schools are demanding environments. Equipment is frequently moved between rooms, displays are installed and removed, extension leads appear during events, and IT provision changes quickly. Older parts of an estate may have electrical infrastructure that has been extended several times. An inspection needs to establish whether the installation remains suitable for how each area is actually being used, rather than how it was designed decades ago.
Fixed-wiring inspection is different from portable appliance testing. Portable appliance testing considers movable equipment such as kettles, chargers, laptops and audiovisual equipment. It can form part of an effective electrical safety plan, but it does not replace an EICR. Likewise, emergency lighting testing, fire-alarm maintenance and inspection of specialist equipment require their own planned regimes, even where the systems share power supplies.
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require electrical systems to be maintained so far as reasonably practicable to prevent danger. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 also places duties on employers and those controlling premises. For maintained schools, academies, independent schools and multi-academy trusts, the detail of who manages the work may differ, but the need for safe systems and defensible records does not.
There is no single inspection interval that is right for every school. The appropriate frequency depends on the building’s age, installation condition, previous findings, occupancy, environmental conditions and the nature of activities taking place. A dry, modern office area will not present the same risk profile as a food-technology room, changing area, workshop or plant room.
A competent inspector can recommend the next inspection date after assessing the installation. Estates teams should treat that date as part of a wider planned preventative maintenance programme, not as a distant diary reminder. Changes in use, flood damage, major refurbishment, reports of electric shocks, repeated circuit tripping or evidence of overheating may justify an earlier inspection or targeted investigation.
The quality of an EICR is affected by access. If distribution boards, risers, ceiling voids and plant areas cannot be accessed, the report may carry limitations. Those limitations matter because they can leave parts of the installation unverified.
Before a school electrical safety inspection, confirm who can provide access to locked rooms, cupboards, roof spaces and outbuildings. Identify safeguarding requirements, restricted areas and any asbestos information relevant to the works. Share existing electrical drawings, previous EICRs, records of remedial works and known operational issues. This enables the contractor to plan efficiently and helps avoid repeat visits.
Planned isolation is equally important. Testing may require circuits or sections of the installation to be temporarily switched off. Agreeing windows during holidays, inset days, evenings or low-occupancy periods can minimise disruption. However, a full shutdown is not always necessary. A contractor should assess the system and sequence work carefully, protecting critical services while completing the necessary testing.
An EICR should give decision-makers more than a pass-or-fail headline. It should identify observations, their location, the associated risk and the action required. Clear reporting allows the responsible person to prioritise work, obtain approval and demonstrate that findings have been addressed.

A report marked unsatisfactory normally contains C1, C2 or FI observations. It should trigger a defined remedial plan, not a vague intention to revisit the issue later. C1 items require immediate control measures. C2 and FI findings need prompt action, with responsibility, timescales and completion evidence recorded.
It is also worth reading beyond the coding. Repeated issues across several buildings can point to a wider estate problem: overloaded circuits in classrooms, damaged accessories in high-traffic areas, missing labels at electrical panels or inadequate local isolation for plant. A contractor that provides clear asset information and photographs where appropriate gives the estates team a better basis for planned investment.
The risks found during inspections vary, but several patterns recur. Older consumer units and distribution boards may lack current protective measures or clear circuit identification. Damaged sockets, cracked accessories and loose containment can arise where rooms receive heavy daily use. Inadequate earthing and bonding can create a serious fault condition that is not visible during normal operation.
Specialist spaces need particular attention. Kitchens combine electrical equipment, heat, moisture and cleaning activity. Science and technology rooms may have local isolators, bench supplies and machinery with changing layouts. Sports halls, external lighting and playground supplies face impact, weather and seasonal use. Plant rooms can contain electrical panels alongside pumps, ventilation equipment and heating controls, making coordinated electrical and HVAC maintenance valuable.
Temporary classrooms and modular buildings should not be overlooked. They may have separate supplies, sub-main cabling and distribution equipment that fall outside the routine inspection of the main building unless the scope is checked carefully. The same applies to leased buildings, community-use areas and facilities managed by third parties.
The inspection report is the starting point. The value comes from closing the loop safely and visibly. Once findings are issued, review them with the contractor and separate immediate risks from planned upgrades. Confirm whether circuits have been isolated, whether temporary controls are in place and whether any affected rooms need restricted use until repairs are complete.
For remedial works, ask for a clear description of the fault, proposed method, affected areas and any expected outage. In a live school setting, contractors should work around safeguarding controls, lesson schedules, pupil movement and site security. Good communication with the site manager and premises team prevents surprises on the day.
After repairs, retain certification, test results and updated circuit information with the original EICR. If a distribution board has been altered, labels and schedules should be updated. If a C2 observation has been resolved, record exactly what was done and when. This creates an auditable trail for governors, trust leadership, insurers and enforcement authorities if questions arise.

An EICR provides a detailed condition check at a point in time, but safe operation continues between inspections. Site teams should encourage staff to report damaged accessories, hot plugs, repeated tripping, burning smells, flickering lights and water ingress immediately. These are operational warning signs, not minor inconveniences to wait on until the next holiday period.
Keep electrical cupboards secure and clear, maintain current panel schedules, and ensure contractors do not make undocumented alterations to circuits. When classrooms are refurbished or technology is added, confirm that circuit capacity, protective devices and containment remain suitable. Small changes can create cumulative demand that the original installation was never designed to support.
The strongest school electrical safety inspection programme is one that gives the responsible person control: a known scope, competent inspection, practical access planning, clear findings and evidence that every safety-critical issue has been closed. That approach protects pupils and staff while giving the estate a realistic, managed route from urgent repair to long-term improvement.
